Many boomers seek well-trodden paths, like Florida, Vegas, and Cancun. But, there are a growing number of open-minded middle-aged travelers choosing adventurous paths, closer to home.

Founder, Liz Dahl, a former travel agent, realized that an increasing number of her clients were people in her age group – baby boomers. She started to send them to distinctive destinations beyond the highly-sought 18 to 49 year-old-demographic for advertisers.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park
Near Amarillo, in the Texas Panhandle, the Palo Duro Canyon can be reached by car within four to five hours from Dallas, Oklahoma City, and Albuquerque.

Eric W. Miller, Director of Communications, Amarillo Convention & Visitor Council, said the canyon is a special place for art lovers. “It was a favorite spot for Georgia O’Keeffe from 1916 to 1918 when she lived in the area,” said Miller.

O’Keeffe would walk eight miles from her home and descend into the canyon. “The big sky, the vivid colors of the canyon and the light helped impart her special style and touch.”

The canyon still remains a favorite spot for artists. During the spring and fall, artists test their skills during sunrise or sunset visits.

There are over 30 miles of roaming trails through the park, including spectacular views of the Red River. Several of the trails are mountain biker friendly, and the canyon has become a top mountain biking destination in Texas.

Mohave Desert

Desert amphibians, reptiles, mammals and birds can be spotted with the help of park interpreters. The endangered desert tortoise makes its home in the Mohave. The Top Seven Reasons to Retire in Mexico

Mexico has become one of the most popular international retirement spots. It’s estimated that 1-million Americans have settled south of the border while hundreds of thousands of snowbirds fly in for the harsh winter months. The reasons are easy to understand.

1. Weather
Tim Leffel, travel writer, author of 4th edition of World’s Cheapest Destinations, lauds Mexico as a land of many desirable climes for northerners tired of long winters.

“There’s hot and sunny beach weather in Cabo San Lucas, La Paz and Puerto Vallarta, explained Leffel. “Or there’s year-round, high altitude, pleasant climate – San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato or San Cristobal de las Casas – eternal spring weather.”

2. Money
Mexico offers a better lifestyle for a lot less money compared to Florida or Phoenix or Taos. In Mexico, retirees can enjoy a similar or better climate, a bigger house, and similar amenities at one-half the price.

“Labor is less expensive. Domestic help is available for substantially less. Americans with average savings can live like wealthy people," Leffel said.

3. Generous tourist visas for snowbirds
Older people can escape the cold winters and head back home in the spring. The Mexican government extends a 180-day tourist visa making Mexico a prime target for snowbirds.

4. Quality health plan
Legal residents can access the Mexican health care system including public clinics and hospitals. Private health care plans are widely available at a fraction of US expenses for private hospitals and clinics.

International travel insurance is widely employed to cover Mexican private health care which can be combined with paying out of pocket. "Or just pay out of pocket because it’s inexpensive, even at a private clinic," said Leffel.

Santiago Hernandez MD, runs ChapalaMed with offices in Chapala and in the nearby cosmopolitan center of Guadalajara. He services the growing ex-pat population.

"I charge one-third of US family doctor's fees,” said Dr. Hernandez. The Mexican-born doctor has resided in the USA for most of his life. He worked in a family medicine practice for two years in Franklin Park, IL and another two years in Aurora, IL, before returning to his homeland.

5. Work
Guadalajara’s Metropolitan Area possesses a 4-million plus population and has become a transplanted high-tech hot spot for a growing number of US companies – HP, Dell, IBM, Kodak, Siemens, Intel, etc. “They're full-time, foreign workers, in their mid-40s to mid-50s," said Hernandez. “Many are have double income no kids. One spouse teaches on the side.”

6. Culture
Retirees have to be willing to adjust and have liberal attitudes. Candidates for Mexican retirement can expect lives that are not clock-driven; Mexicans aren’t a rushed people. They spend more time in conversation. “People are more interested in face-to-face relationships and relaxation than the back-home work ethic,” said Leffel.

7. Safety
Despite reports of crime in Mexico, insiders report that it’s very safe. Parts of Mexico are dangerous, Leffel warns, especially near the US border where drug trade conduits exist. But spots where groups of retirees live are always safe.

Leffel described the Yucatan as safer than most US cities. “If you’re away from drug dealing zones, there’s no problem in terms of getting caught in the cross-fire.”

Pew Internet’s release, finding 60% of adults between the ages of 50 and 64 employing social networks, unites with its other major statistic – 43% of adults over 65 hitting the social media trail.

Previous Pew Internet reports displayed that the 50 + demographic had become more in touch with online tools – computers, tablets, cell phones – to utilize social media [Tablet Ownership 2013, June 10, 2013]

Lynn Strickland, Director of Social Media and Outreach for Interactivity Marketing, perceives a growing online market between older adults and Internet businesses.

“Social media is reaching out to older adults,” said Strickland. “Ads on Facebook can drill down to age groups based on their interests.” More seniors, especially with discretionary income, see the value of Facebook’s reviews and promotional discounts.

Seniors In an Age of Yelp

Strickland points to the popularity of review sites like Yelp.com, TripAdvisor.com and Foursquare – actually an app – as contributing to the online flow of older adults sporting smartphones and tablets.

Older adults trust social media because it connects real faces with real names. They can read authentic testimonials about products and services with less reliance on letter writing, phone calls, or personal visits to businesses.

Social Media – The New Employment Path for Older Adults

Networking is an effective way to find a job, especially with the growth of the long-term unemployed and a tight job market for older adults.

The average duration of unemployment for older workers is nearly 50 weeks, far above the 37-week average for the broader workforce, wrote the Huffington Post on April 17, 2013.

Author and Social Media Consultant, Don Power believes that social media offers a possible solution to 55+ unemployment. “It broadens their small circle of friends and introduces them to a new community.”

Twitter for Older Job Searchers

The recent Pew Internet research showed the 50 to 64 year old age bracket climbing from 6% to 13%, from November, 2010 to May 2013. Employment seekers could form a meaningful part of that statistic.

“Twitter provides an avenue to break out of Facebook’s customary loop and to meet new people,” said Power. “It’s Facebook pared-down.” With a 140 character maximum, it’s designed like a social network appealing to seniors’ natural congeniality.

Road Safety Week is for Seniors, for everyone

Canada Road Safety Week began on May 14 and will run through the national holiday weekend, culminating on May 20, Victoria Day.

In Ontario, Canada’s most populated province, the Ontario Provincial Police (O.P.P.) will increase their presence on the roads. The Victoria Day weekend is a spring celebration, well-known for alcohol consumption, fireworks, and opening the cottage.

The dangers of drunk driving on the highway is well documented. Dangerous driving from seniors might be due to fatigue. They need to remember to pull over to the right side of the road. But, do they fall into the aggressive, intoxicated population that leads to highway fatalities?

“Sure, if we’re talking about 55 plus seniors they could very well be out driving intoxicated,” said Sergeant Dave Woodford of the Highway Safety Division operating out of the Greater Toronto Area.

“But, by and large, seniors are good drivers,” he said.

Aggressive drivers, distracted drivers, and intoxicated drivers crisscross the age spectrum and include older adults.

The O.P.P reports 5,700 distracted driving charges up till the Victoria Day weekend. It reports 30,000 annual charges for failing to wear seat belts, even though the province’s seat belt law was enacted in January, 1976.

Road Safety Week’s message goes out to all ages. The O.P.P. has partnered with the Canadian Association of Retired People – CARP – to create the Drive Wise program to help seniors with their age-related needs.

According to the Highway Safety Division, the top driving infringements that Canadian police look for, year-round, and especially on holiday weekends, are:

1. Failure to wear seat belts
2. Impaired driving
3. Aggressive driving and speeding
4. Distracted driving

Traffic Staff Sergeant Dave Mantey is from the Northwest Region centered from Thunder Bay, ON, stretching towards the Manitoba border. The O.P.P. veteran said he has an 89-year-old father who still drives.

“Everyone needs to follow the same rules regardless of age,” and he reminded drivers to leave ample space between vehicles.

The Northwest region is remote and densely forested. In this region, Mantey and his fellow officers apply different rules than in metropolitan areas. Seniors who drive need to be aware of animals that may stray on the highway. In winter, when the snow is high, they should increase the distance between vehicles.

Mantey asked that retired seniors consider staying at home in bad weather conditions rather than going out.

“If you don’t need to go out, stay home,” he said. “Whatever it is, it can wait.”

Old and young Canadians are looking forward to the long Victoria Day Weekend, to enjoy recreation on the roads, waterways, and back trails. Cars, boats, and off-road vehicles provide leisure and an opportunity to get away from city living.

The regulations keep everyone safe and try to protect against bad decisions leading to tragic ends.

The best road trips for Baby Boomers

For as long as the automobile has been widely available, road trips has become a favorite pastime for millions of North Americans. Thanks to a landscape with abundant natural beauty, thousands of miles of paved roads, and plenty of opportunities for breaks and refreshments, recreational road trips can also be an excellent and relatively low-cost vacation opportunity for seniors in the United States and Canada.

Especially for seniors, many types of travel can be a stressful experience. The compact nature of commercial airliners, combined with security precautions and restrictions regarding baggage, can be limiting for many passengers. Trains offer a comfortable and affordable alternative for travel, but this option doesn’t offer the flexibility of stopping and detouring, either.

Deborah Vahabi, Auto Travel Advisor with the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA), told RetirementHomes.com that although road trips offer vacationers a great deal of flexibility about how to plan their outings, driving your own car means you are responsible for making sure it runs smoothly during the trip. She offered these tips for Boomer road trippers before they leave for vacation.

1. Prepare your car before you leave. That includes changing the oil, and testing the battery, fluids and tire pressure.
2. When packing the car, place the largest items in the vehicle first. That helps to ensure that there is room for the most important luggage. After that, fit in the smaller items.

3. Remember to pack emergency items, including a flashlight and batteries, a first aid kit, a cell phone (with charger), maps and/or a GPS.

Road trip veteran Jamie Jensen, who wrote three books on the subject called “Road Trip USA,” told RetirementHomes.com that Baby Boomers may recall road trips from their youth, but things have changed since then.

“There is a lot less "fun" on the road these days, compared to the 1950s and 60s when people were more open to stopping to ride a steam train or roller coaster, or to "See Live Bears" and enjoy a laugh here and there,” he said.

Jensen added that the changing face of road trips doesn’t have to mean less fun for Boomers, though.

“I think that older people probably have more time to enjoy traveling "off the Interstates, to explore the regional differences and savor the better food and conversations you find away from the ‘fast lane,’” he said.

The most affordable retirement destinations around the world include the Philippines, Thailand, Ecuador, and Malaysia. The most expensive retirement spots include New Zealand, Ireland, and France.

The retirement destinations with the highest availability of healthcare include France, Uruguay and Malaysia, while the countries which scored poorer include New Zealand and Italy.

In terms of real estate affordability specifically, Central America offers many options, including Costa Rica, Ecuador, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, but the more expensive locations include France, Italy, and Portugal.

The top-ranked country in the world by International Living is the Central American nation of Ecuador, which scored highly in climate, real estate prices, overall affordability, as well as availability of healthcare options.

Ecuador, sandwiched between Peru and Colombia, has a population of around 15 million people, and a Pacific Ocean coastline more than 2,300 kilometers long. The capital, Quito, sits high atop the Andes mountains, has 2.2 million residents and is located in the northern interior of the country.
