Austin Texas Develops Senior Urban Village

The board of the Rebekah Baines Johnson Center in Austin, Texas, is looking for a partner to redevelop 18 acres of prime real estate overlooking Lady Bird Lake. The American-Stateman wrote that the housing project is intended for low-income senior citizens in East Austin.

The center also provides housing for people with disabilities. The increase in units will provide new residential, retail and commercial development.

Austin Geriatric Center, a nonprofit corporation, which owns and manages the Rebekah Baines Johnson Center, told the American-Statesman that it will seek proposals from developers with proven track record and finances to assist the board in the redevelopment of the site.

Nearby diversification via grocery stores, restaurants, a health clinic and skilled nursing facilities, will create a veritable senior housing urban village. The goal is to incorporate retail and commercial development for residents and the surrounding community.

The city is creating a master plan for 100 acres of green space near the RBJ project which could galvanize developer interest on the national level. The Rebekah Baines Johnson Center opened in 1972 and was named for President Lyndon B. Johnson's mother.

An Austin real estate expert noted that the location and size of the parcel should enable the development of another catalytic project on the near east side.

Many Assisted Living and Continuing Care residences are moving towards the urban village concept.

Legacy Gift Launches Ohio Memory Care Pavilion

A $2 million “legacy gift” will help create a new assisted living memory care pavilion for Montefiore, a nursing facility for senior citizens in Beachwood, OH.

The gift comes courtesy of Steve Willensky and his wife, Judy Klein Willensky, members of The Park Synagogue. “I decided Montefiore was a great fit for me as I’m interested in senior aging issues,” Steve Willensky told Cleveland.com. “I felt Montefiore represented the best of what our community offers.”

The Willenskys, of Gates Mills, OH, said they felt attached to Montefiore from both an advisory and emotional standpoint. The new assisted living memory care pavilion has been named The Willensky Residence.

The Willenskys’ legacy gift positions Montefiore as a leader in senior health care and wellness services in Northeast Ohio, setting it apart with a greatly-needed service to continuum of care.

The pavilion includes specialized studio rooms and two suites with private bathroom and shower. Willensky said he and his wife were very much involved in the planning of the memory care pavilion.

The Willensky Residence comes equipped with a living room with bookshelves and a fireplace, a multi-sensory room for stimulation of the five senses, a beauty salon, a barber shop and a fully equipped laundry room. Outside and easily accessible, is a secure courtyard garden with a walking path and seating areas.

The Willensky Residence has set the benchmark for memory care in Assisted Living and Continuing Care across the USA.

Assisted Living Facilities in Las Vegas are Expected to Boom

Las Vegas and all of Southern Nevada will undergo a growth in assisted living facilities and ACOs (accountable care organizations) which comes into effect this month as part of the Affordable Health Act, The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.

Stacy Scheer, an expert in medical real estate properties at Colliers International told the Review-Journal that new developments will spur an expansion in Southern Nevada's assisted living market. As well, large patient-centered ACOs will partner with small practices and sole practitioners. "The need for skilled nursing and assisted living facilities is rising," Scheer said.

Las Vegas hospitals expect to act on the medical boom by expanding facilities. $68 million in construction at MountainView Hospital will add a new emergency room and an ICU. 326 beds will be added to the St. Rose Dominican Hospital at its Siena campus.

A demand for more doctors' offices, hospitals, outpatient clinics and long-term care facilities will perpetuate the nationwide development of 60 million square feet of medical real estate. Many physician organizations are investing in expansion and cost reduction by recommending the building of retirement residences alongside hospitals.

Old flames rekindle their romance at an assisted living facility

When Horace Sheats and Marguerite Pentecost first met, it was at dance in the 1930s. Sheats cut in to save Pentecost (née Bethany) from a bad dancer, and the two dated for several years before breaking up, according to the Decatur Daily.

However, two years ago, the pair met up again in a strange coincidence.

When the 90-year-old Sheats walked over to a nearby assisted living facility, he was re-introduced to Pentecost by one of her fellow residents, and they've been together ever since, the news source reports.

The couple spends their days socializing in the dining hall and making shopping trips in Sheats' pick-up.

"We help each other out," Pentecost told the news provider. "We've been good for each other."

Though their new relationship has clearly brought joy into their lives, studies suggests that being in a relationship might actually be good for your overall health. In fact, a recent study from the University of Michigan suggests that individuals who are married are likely to live longer.

Active living seniors enjoy afternoon jam sessions

Lucy plays the spoon and harmonica, and Charles jumps in as well. The musicians play everything from blue grass to gospel, the news source reports.

In addition to the honing their musical abilities, the retirement living seniors who participate can look forward to the get-togethers.

"I wanted a place that was pretty close to home where I could play with my friends and just relax and have a good time," senior Warren Hickman told the news provider.

According to the HealthDay Reporter, music can activate a relaxation response in the brain, and can ease anxiety and provide an emotional release.

So pick up your old violin or dust off those piano keys!

Active living seniors can beat SAD by staying engaged

Though many individuals are familiar with the effects of SAD (seasonal affective disorder) which often accompanies long periods of sun deprivation, it's sometimes difficult to stay energized during the winter months.

However, the residents of retirement living communities in Lake County, Illinois, have found ways to battle the blues and stay active until the spring thaw, according to the Lake County News-Sun.

Active living seniors participate in activities such as competitive water volleyball, games on pinochle, computer lessons, tai chi and games of Texas hold 'em, according to the news source.

"I spend a lot of time quilting and I do a lot of gardening, but you gotta be with other people," senior Carol Hawkins told the news provider. "I feel fine all the time."

Those who are affected by SAD might feel fatigued and crave high-energy foods like sweets and starches.

According to the National Institute of Health, there are also other ways to manage SAD, including changing your diet, managing stress and seeking out a sunny climate during winter months.

Active living seniors can Rally for the Cure in Arizona

Many retirement living seniors spend sunny afternoons and weekends perfecting their swing or working on their short game, but avid golfers in Arizona are also able to take part in Rally for the Cure, a breast cancer awareness campaign that kicked off in 1996, according to TriValleyCentral.com.

Over the past 15 years, the initiative, which is the largest grassroots women's golf program, has attracted more than 1.4 million participants.

On March 30, about 60 volunteers of all ages will be taking part in the Rally at Robson Ranch, according to the news provider. Golfers will participate in a closest-to-the-pin contest as well as their 18 holes.

Breast cancer is an issue that affects many females, but retirement living women should be especially vigilant about their breast health. Susan Komen for the Cure, an organization involved in Rally for the Cure, reports that breast cancer contributes to more than 75 percent of all cancer deaths in women 55 years of age and older.

The campaign emphasizes the importance of regular breast cancer screenings and the benefits of early detection, and the American Cancer Society recommends that starting at age 40 women should have annual breast health screenings and mammograms to ensure early detection.

Mediterranean diet may reduce retirement living seniors'risk of Alzheimer's disease

A new study set to be presented to the American Academy of Neurology found that individuals who ate a Mediterranean-like diet were less likely to have areas of dead brain tissue, called infarcts, which may lead to thinking problems and could eventually increase the need for memory care.

The researchers conducted brain scans of 712 people from New York and divided them into three separate groups based on how much their daily dietary intake resembled the Mediterranean diet.

They conducted brain scans again six years later and compared the results.

In this study, not eating a Mediterranean-like diet had about the same effect on the brain as having high blood pressure," said study author Nikolaos Scarmeas.

To reap the benefits of a Mediterranean diet, active living seniors should include plenty of fruits and vegetables, legumes, fish and heart-healthy fats like olive oil. The diet also typically avoids dairy products and large amounts of meat.

According to Business Week, other studies have found that in addition to raising a person's chances of requiring Alzheimer's care, brain infarcts increase a person's likelihood of developing depression, cancer and heart disease.

Retirement living seniors have high rates of recreation drug use, study shows

According to a study commissioned by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, a total of 8 percent of Americans between the ages of 50 and 59 have used a controlled substance or a prescription drug recreationally within the last year.

The most commonly used substance was marijuana, which was closely followed by the abuse of prescription medications such as anti-anxiety drugs and sleeping pills.

Though substance abuse can lead to a host of health problems for retirement living seniors, researchers are also worried that drug-addicted baby boomers could put a huge strain on treatment programs, according to the Boston Globe.

"We are projecting that by the year 2020, we will probably have enough people in the 50-to-59 age group needing [substance abuse] treatment that we will probably need to double the number of treatment facilities," Peter Delany, the substance abuse agency's director of the Office of Applied Studies, told the news source.

The National Institute of Health reports that marijuana is the most commonly used illegal drug in the U.S., and that abuse can lead to problems with memory, learning and social behaviors.

Retirement living seniors who have a loving connection with a spouse less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease

A study recently published in the British Medical Journal reports that those who live with a partner during their retirement years? have approximately half the chances of developing Alzheimer's disease as those who live alone.

The study also suggested that individuals who are isolated from loved ones, such as those who lose a spouse, might have higher chances of developing the disease.

Because the aging baby boomer population is at risk for developing the condition, preventative memory care may bring significant benefits.

Active living seniors who wish to feel a connection with the world around them could volunteer at local community centers or hospitals, or be a mentor to an underprivileged child. Not only will their contributions benefit the community, but the bonds they form may safeguard their health.

According to the Mayo Clinic 5 percent of people between the ages of 65 and 74 and nearly half the people over the age of 85 require Alzheimer's care.
