Commune for Seniors Goes Beyond Materialism

The Fellowship Community’s adult home offers a wealth of opportunities for an aging population looking for an alternative to traditional assisted living retirement.

Located in Chesnut Ridge, New York, bordering New Jersey, and only 30 miles from Manhattan, the commune-like setting maintains a farm, a dairy barn with 10 cows, a candle shop, a print shop, a metal shop, a wood shop, and a pottery studio.

ABCNews describes the community as a collection of about 130 men, women and children. Founded in 1966 it's a setting for seniors and aging baby boomers.

A Part of Life - Birth and Death

Administrator Ann Scharff told ABCNews: "We provide a space in which people can prepare to die in a way that is accepted and nourishing to them and fraught with meaning.” Scharff added “it’s not something you run away from, but it’s part of the whole spectrum of life, just as birth is part of life and is prepared for.”

The commune is based on Rudolf Steiner's principles of anthroposophy centered on inner development for those who wish to bring their inner work to benefit the wider world. Some residents enter The Fellowship with a firm grasp of Steiner's philosophy; others learn it over time.

Going Beyond Materialism

Helpers assist the elderly with meals, bathing, and medication. Rather than expecting to being catered-to residents, the seniors help maintain the grounds, do farm work and contribute to the commune's sustainability.

Will Bosch, head of the community's board of trustees told ABCNews, "Communal life and work appeals to people who are dismayed with the materialism of the world and are trying to get above it."

Assisted Living Facilities in Las Vegas are Expected to Boom

Las Vegas and all of Southern Nevada will undergo a growth in assisted living facilities and ACOs (accountable care organizations) which comes into effect this month as part of the Affordable Health Act, The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.

Stacy Scheer, an expert in medical real estate properties at Colliers International told the Review-Journal that new developments will spur an expansion in Southern Nevada's assisted living market. As well, large patient-centered ACOs will partner with small practices and sole practitioners. "The need for skilled nursing and assisted living facilities is rising," Scheer said.

Las Vegas hospitals expect to act on the medical boom by expanding facilities. $68 million in construction at MountainView Hospital will add a new emergency room and an ICU. 326 beds will be added to the St. Rose Dominican Hospital at its Siena campus.

A demand for more doctors' offices, hospitals, outpatient clinics and long-term care facilities will perpetuate the nationwide development of 60 million square feet of medical real estate. Many physician organizations are investing in expansion and cost reduction by recommending the building of retirement residences alongside hospitals.

Vitamin D beneficial to residents of assisted living facilities

Many residents of assisted living facilities often feel more secure in the knowledge that if they fall, help is just around the corner. However, a senior who breaks a bone or hits their head often has a long road to recovery ahead of them.

Some nursing homes and assisted living facilities may soon be administering vitamin D to patients in an effort to prevent such falls from happening, after experts revealed that patients who received a daily dose of the nutrient were less likely to fall than those who did not.

The review was conducted by the Cochrane Library, because it has been found that patients are more likely to fall in an assisted living facility than they are if they are living independently.

The researchers found that patients who took Vitamin D had a 28 percent lower risk of falling than those who did not.

The study also investigated other ways that staff at assisted living facilities could prevent falls, and they found that administering vitamin D in combination with other initiatives, such as making sure that patients get exercise and are using the equipment which equipment?, further insured the safety of residents.

Could blueberry juice help active living seniors improve their memory?

A new study conducted at the University of Cincinnati's Academic Health Center suggests that the antioxidants in blueberries could boost seniors' memory and prevent cognitive decline.

According to Medical News Today, researchers asked a group of nine seniors in their seventies who showed signs of early memory loss to take a cognitive test. They then asked the volunteers to drink two and a half cups of commercially-available blueberry juice a day for 12 weeks.

After the 12 weeks, participants repeated the original test to see if their scores changed, and researchers compared their results with those of similar studies who used a control group.

It was found that individuals who drank the prescribed amount of blueberry juice showed improved performance on their second test.

"These preliminary memory findings are encouraging and suggest that consistent supplementation with blueberries may offer an approach to forestall or mitigate neurodegeneration," the researchers wrote in their report.

According to the Mayo Clinic, nearly 5 percent of Americans between the ages of 65 and 74 suffer from Alzheimer's disease.

Active living seniors may discuss memory-preserving habits they could incorporate into their daily routine with their healthcare providers.

Active living seniors who strength train may reap health benefits

Though stereotypically, the weight room in any local gym is the territory of high school football players, people of all ages and fitness levels, particularly women between the ages of 65 and 75, may benefit from strength training, according to the New York Times.

A recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine asked 155 women who were active living seniors to break into two groups.

One team did strength training exercises on a weekly basis, and the other did toning exercises.

After a year, the researchers found that those who were in the weight-lifting group improved their overall fitness levels by between 10.9 and 12.6 percent, while individuals in the toning group actually experienced a 0.5 percent decline, according to the news source.

In light of these findings, active living seniors might consider incorporating strength training into their daily routines as part of a healthy lifestyle.

The Mayo Clinic reports that strength training on a regular basis will help preserve muscle mass and bone density, help maintain a healthy body weight and could even reduce a person's risk of insomnia.

Active living seniors likely to reap the benefits of aerobic activity

A new study published in the American Journal of Neuroradiology suggests that active living seniors who exercise are likely to experience a variety of benefits, and that their brains may look more like the brains of younger adults.

Researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine followed seven men and seven women between the ages of 60 and 80 who were divided into two groups: those who exercised 180 minutes per week over the course of 10 years, and those who exercised less than 90 minutes per week.

The experts found that the blood vessels in the brains of seniors who exercised were less twisted and narrowed than those in the brains of the more sedentary adults.

It is expected that this pilot study will lay the groundwork for researchers to delve more deeply into the effect that physical activity has on brain health.

Though there is still much to be learned about all of the benefits of regular exercise, the National Institute of Health reports that regular exercise can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes and heart health problems.
