Grab bars, home monitoring system important additions for caregivers

Providing care for a family member who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's can certainly be a daunting task. The stress and worry that go along with making sure they are safe can take its toll, but The Huffington Post offers several ways to make a home more equipped to provide adequate eldercare and alleviate some concern on behalf of the homeowner.

One easy way to update a home is to replace ordinary towel bars with more stable grab bars.

"You can use grab bars for towel racks, but you certainly should never use towel racks as grab bars. Switch them as soon as possible, all throughout the house," occupational therapist Jennifer E Anderson told the news source.

Anderson added that a home monitoring system can be particularly important as it can allow loved ones to easily call for help if they are unattended.

According to the Alzheimer's Association, 5.3 million Americans are affected by the mental illness, and it is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.
