Communities have been offering training seminars for elderly residents looking to incorporate the internet in retirement living plans, and a recent example found seniors in Franklin Township, New Jersey learning how to avoid scams and find their way online.
According to Pew Research, seniors are increasing their use of broadband internet which allows them to easily access complex websites, and the session at the municipal community and senior center used Verizon employees to educate the elderly residents on how to best use the technology.
"The internet provides many benefits including education and entertainment, and more and more seniors using this valuable tool," said Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula, who sponsored the presentation.
"However, as technology continues to advance, it is critical that all New Jersey citizens, including seniors, have the knowledge and tools so they can continue to use the internet safely and confidently."
Those who may not be able to attend a similar class in their area should beware of clicking on suspicious links or filling out forms that require social security or account numbers, according to KOMO news radio.
