The best cities for older singles

When it comes to cheap retirement destinations, South America is hard to beat. But when it comes to the best cities for single seniors, there are plenty of excellent options in the U.S., according to a recent survey by AARP.

According to the study, the top ten cities for older singles are:

-    San Francisco, California
-    Boston, Massachusetts
-    Baltimore, Maryland
-    Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota
-    St. Louis, Missouri
-    New York, New York
-    Cleveland, Ohio
-    Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
-    Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
-    Milwaukee, Wisconsin

AARP compiled the list of cities based on a number of criteria, including the affordability of healthcare in that location, a large percentage of older people in each city, as well as a lot of activities for both locals and tourists.

Some of the cities, such as San Francisco and New York City, are expensive locations, but San Francisco houses nearly 110,000 seniors aged 65 and above, while the Big Apple is home to nearly a million 65+ seniors. So for those looking to find a mate, those are good places to start looking.

Other, smaller cities such as Cleveland and Milwaukee are also good bets for single seniors because of their healthcare options and affordable real estate, including both houses and assisted living communities.
