In 1996 AlfredHouse ElderCare had the privilege of caring for a gentleman who had once retro-fitted and captained a ship from England to America. He was a man of great intellect, who had many accomplishments and even greater dignity. Regrettably, the terrible effects of Alzheimer’s began to take hold and this fine gentleman began disrobing during the night much to the chagrin of his family, Dr. Alfred and her staff.  The answers were very limited, but included safety pinning garments closed, putting pajamas on backwards, and then dressing the gentleman in coveralls, finally trying to turn them around backwards – all that left the gentleman uncomfortable and still did not solve the problem.  Dr. Alfred thought to make a prototype of a one piece garment that would protect the gentleman’s dignity, making him very comfortable and provided the caregivers struggle free dressing.  When the first garment was crafted it was gifted to the gentleman and what a difference it made! It was a simple, practical, one color fabric garment that helped to maintain the decorum and self-respect of the gentleman. The gentleman was finally comfortable, the family and caregivers were pleased and Dr. Alfred’s idea had given birth!  Mr. Alfred knew his wife was on to something important and encouraged his wife to seek a patent and it was granted in July 2001! Since then Dr. Alfred has been inspired by the need for personalization and greater dignity for her AlfredHouse Residents. She loves to see her Residents looking as they did prior to the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s. As you look at CareWear you will note the next generation of CareWear is very refined, business casual fashion, and there are even more new adaptations in the works!  CareWear reflects all these values birthed from a need to preserve the dignity of the gentleman in 1996 and continuing to do so far, all the ladies and gentlemen since who are afflicted by the debilitation of the disease and dementia. Dr. Alfred gifted CareWear garments until 2007, and began mass producing them in 2008. The tradition continues of annually choosing a worthy nursing home that cares for Alzheimer’s Residents and gifting a selection to those who can benefit from CareWear.
