Seniors aren't taking advantage of Drug Card
Date Added: 06-04-2005
At this coffee shop, you can hear the talk of the town, and the talk of a generation. Gretchen Olson is a senior, and tells KIMT Newschannel Three, "I think if you use, need a lot of medication, it would probably help if you put out four, five, six-hundred dollars."
For today's seniors, prescription drugs continue to take a big chunk from their income.
Fortunately for Gretchen, that's not the case.
She adds, "I Feel pretty lucky."
And she is, more and more seniors are having to choose between dinner and medicine. That's why the government started the senior drug discount card.
It gives a six-hundred dollar credit to low-income seniors, but just a percentage discount for others.
But get this, two thirds of low income seniors never signed up.
But it's not just low-income seniors who are taking the deal.
Maurice Fahrney is a senior and tells KIMT Newschannel Three, "When we first started reading about it, we felt that we were probably again being left out, for help."
Maurice and his wife make too much to qualify as low-income, but they could still get the basic discount card.
They don't have it.
