Date Added: 05-04-2005

CONCORD, N.H. -- A government report on health care quality says New Hampshire takes good care of its youngest residents but has room to improve when it comes to the elderly.

The report by the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality includes data for several categories, including cancer and heart disease treatment, maternal and child health, and nursing home care.

It ranks New Hampshire second in the country in providing early prenatal care to pregnant woman and rates the state above average for vaccinating young children and having few infant deaths or low-birth-weight babies.

But at the opposite end of the spectrum, the state ranks below average in several areas related to the elderly, including the percentage of nursing home residents who were depressed or anxious. New Hampshire also was below average in providing pneumonia vaccinations to people over age 65.
