After the Peru City Council approved a new $7.4 million senior housing complex Monday, retired sheriff Ken Washkowiak filed out of chambers with fellow seniors who sat quietly in support of the development.
“It (affordable housing) is a dire need for the senior citizens,” said Washkowiak, who served as La Salle County’s top lawman from 1978-1982.
Most of the city council agreed. By a 6-1 vote, with alderman Dave Potthoff voting “no” and alderman Tony Ferrari abstaining, the council approved the annexation, preliminary and final plats for the Stough Group’s proposed Peru Senior Housing Unit.
The Stough Group, which already operates 60 units located west of Marquette Road, wants to build 62 single-bedroom homes north of Shooting Park Road and east of Marquette Road.
