The November issue of Money magazine describes the perfect retirement; CNN recently devoted a significant amount of time to discussing retirement planning; and a recent issue of Time also addresses this issue. Needless to say, the bulk of this attention focused on needing an adequate nest egg to achieve your retirement dreams. For me, how much money you'll need is only one piece of the retirement package. How will you remain independent and free of disease? How will you stay happy and fulfilled? What can you do now to ensure that retirement years are truly "golden years"? Ultimately, this all boils down to one main question: When should you retire? Before answering, be careful. A new study shows that an extra five years can involve a life or death situation. Although many think of 65 as retirement age, times are changing. Now, age cannot be used to force anyone to retire, and many are continuing to work productively well into their 70s and beyond. Often this is a personal choice, but it would be naive to think that our 70-plus workers avoid retirement because working is fun. Financial limitations certainly can play a role.
