Assisted living guru looks into industry's future

Craig L. Smith, reknowned senior housing advisor, and leader of Integra Realty Resources, has a vision for the future. Read the excerpt below

Craig L. Smith has been advising senior housing project developers for more than 25 years.
He was around when nursing homes morphed in the 1980s to take care of the sickest and weakest senior citizens. He witnessed the rise of assisted-living centers in the 1990s and has been helping developers work through problems of overbuilding ever since.
Smith, a longtime resident of Sarasota and leader of Integra Realty Resources senior housing and health care practice, believes the assisted-living market is now returning to equilibrium. That means developers will begin building centers again.
These projects will look a lot like the ones built during the past decade, but Smith believes developers need to focus on creating senior housing projects that will meet the needs of older people in 2025 and beyond.
That's when the baby boomers will hit their twilight years, and when a shortage of labor will present major challenges to senior housing operators.
