NEWBERRY SPRINGS -- The water park at Lake Delores may be shut down for good, but its owners are proposing to use that land for something drastically different -- a huge, gated senior residential development.
Terry Christensen and SL Investment Group LLC, owners of the closed water park just north of Interstate 15 in Newberry Springs, have applied to build a 273-acre development called Newberry Springs Estates that would eventually contain more than 1,400 homes meant for residents over age 55.
Christensen, representing KHL Development LLC, said he got the idea after discovering thousands of seniors in Southern California were selling their homes when they retired and moving to Las Vegas.
"We're losing people to Vegas because of the price," Christensen said. "They're selling homes for $500,000, then buying homes in Vegas for $250,000."
