Neighbor dreams of senior housing at Youth Campus

As the Youth Campus of Park Ridge, 733 N. Prospect Ave., prepares to sell a portion of its 13-acre campus to a developer who will construct three single family homes, a neighbor has proposed what he believes will be a better, long-term plan.
Herbert Zuegel says the land upon which the century-old campus sits would be better suited for "first class senior citizen housing." In an address before the Park Ridge City Council Oct. 17, Zuegel proposed a plan for a minimum of 60 senior housing units that could be constructed around the 12 historic buildings on the site.
Zuegel said he and other neighbors have met with Youth Campus staff and want to schedule a meeting with the campus' board of directors.
"We believe providing a home for seniors for the remainder of their lives, plus estate and/or income tax benefits to them, can be accomplished through donation of their highly appreciated residences to the Youth Campus," Zuegel said. If the campus received 100 donated homes from seniors and resold them for $500,000 each, the campus would receive $50 million, he said.
