AFTER THE DEATH OF her husband more than a decade ago, Joan Cain took up a new hobby: travel.
Since then, the 62-year-old has visited Tibet, Mongolia, Burma, Cambodia, Antarctica, Tunisia, Peru and Slovenia, among other places. These trips aren't your typical see-it-from-a-bus-window type of excursions. On a recent trip to Africa, Cain camped out on the Niger River, climbed along the Bandiagara Escarpment and spent the night in a Dogon village.

Cain books most of her trips through ElderTreks, a Toronto-based adventure-travel company targeting clients age 50 and older. The company offers trips to some 90 exotic destinations each year, most with small groups of no more than 16.

Cain says the travel has changed her life. "What I've come to realize the more I travel is that even though we're different, we're still the same," she says of people in other cultures. "Our interests are still health, happiness and sufficient food for our kids. It's the same interests world-wide."
