It's 10 minutes to 3 p.m. and Teresa Reed, 51, finds herself doing the Chicken Dance with Anthony Santagati, 90. "Age is in your head," says Reed, program service director of Morningside of Beaufort assisted living facility. "If you want to be old, you'll be old."
As the pair simulate chirping bird beaks with cupped hands and jiggle their behinds during the facility's weekly happy hour, about 30 senior citizens look on while cupping their own hands around champagne flutes flowing with Zinfandel.
The seniors munch on purple grapes and cheese, laugh and chitchat as they seemingly absorb the spectacle that has somehow become part of their everyday lives.
"People from all walks of life end up in this building: teachers, engineers, doctors, writers ..." Reed says. "People forget that sometimes. Maybe they choose to forget because they're scared of their own future."
