Athens City Council hasn't yet introduced an ordinance supporting the proposed near-east-side retirement center, but it's poised to do so before the year-end turnover on council could affect a vote's outcome.
"I see that coming in the near future," predicted council member Jim Sands, D-at large, at Monday night's Planning and Development Committee meeting.
The retirement center proposal has been controversial, with both opponents and supporters making appeals to City Council.
Monday evening, representatives of National Church Residences (NCR), the Columbus non-profit corporation that's developing the project, addressed concerns about flood-plain impacts and the need for the retirement center before the committee, Mayor Ric Abel and about 25 local residents.
Project engineer Josh Reinicke presented an updated map of the selected site next to the Hocking River and across Stimson Avenue from Mill Street Apartments. It's a grassy, open space used by community members for playing soccer and other outdoor activities. Read the entire article:
