WORTHINGTON — When Laretta Graham tells one of her humorous stories a hush goes over her spellbound audience at the Worthington Senior Center. “They’d better be quiet,” Graham said with a wry smile, followed by a hearty laugh.
Graham’s stories and jokes, an almost daily informal agenda eagerly anticipated by the 60 or so seniors at the center, are met with smiling faces and a round of applause, said center director Phyllis Wonderling.
“Telling stories and jokes sort of runs in the family,” Graham said. “When I was a little girl we had an outhouse, and my brother would write jokes on the outhouse walls. As soon as they’d be erased, he’d write more. Most were fit to repeat, some were not, but all were very funny.
“Today, I get most of my jokes from friends through e-mail or off the internet, but I try to give them a personal twist and sometimes relate them to the area we live in. Sometimes I turn them into humorous stories.”
