A growing number of families are turning to agencies that provide services such as light housecleaning, grocery shopping, meal preparation and companionship aimed at keeping seniors healthy – and independent – as they age.
Home Instead Senior Care in Omaha (Nebraska) was founded in the late 1990s.
The agency's typical client is between the ages of 75 and 85. Two-thirds are women, most of them living alone. The daily services help the elderly thrive and contribute to give them a much better quality of life.Without them a lot of seniors would do nothing.
Very often the seniors join the caretakers to tidy up the house or work in the garden.
On average, caregivers spend about 15 hours a week with each senior at a cost of about $.1,000 a month.
The Pittsburgh Post Gazette (Non-medical services keep more seniors in their homes ; 11/07/2005) reports that 700 members work for The National Private Duty Association in Indianapolis (Indiana).
Three quarters of them specialize in non-medical in-home care.
Sheltering Arms Senior Services in Houston (Texas) is a non-profit organization which provides long-term assistance but also aid for short periods, to bridge a crisis.
Doctors often do many outpatient surgeries, as opposed to putting the seniors in hospitals and they generally need help for a while.
Elder care agencies spare seniors the nursing homes or assisted living and allow them to stay longer in their homes and enjoy their neighbourhood.
