They say they don’t want to go into a nursing home, and that it won’t happen to them. It’s like car insurance, said Debbie Durham, vice president for Caretel Inns. People have it, but don’t believe they’ll ever get in an accident. “We put it off until we have to have it,” she said. Yet, many eventually need long-term care. It is estimated that more than 900,000 Americans live in approximately 39,500 assisted living residences in the United States, according to the 2009 MetLife Market Survey of Nursing Home, Assisted Living, Adult Day Services and Other Costs.
