Nurses urge graduates to consider long-term care

Gail Powers has seen a lot of changes in her 22 years working at Cassellholme Home for the Aged.
“When I started, the residents were up and about,” said the registered nurse. “They had a few medical issues.”
Today, many of the residents are ill and require more care, straining resources and an already-short nursing staff.
“We have very sick people here,” Powers said. “They come to us from their homes in the community but mostly from hospitals where they are awaiting placement.”
And attracting nurses to care for the elderly can be difficult, Powers said.
