Senior conference celebrates 25th year

Date Added: 11-04-2005

MARLBOROUGH -- Plans for the annual senior conference hosted by state Sen. Pam Resor, (D-Acton), are under way, with this year marking the event's 25th anniversary.

The conference is a free daylong event for senior citizens aimed at providing them with important information. Issues on the table range from health care to prescription drugs to personal safety and financial planning.

"I look foward to this event each year as an opportunity to greet and to hear from seniors around the district," Resor said. "I hope that everyone who attends will take some valuable information away with them as well as spending a fun day with friends both old and new."

Free vision screening in the EyeMobile, a state-of-the-art vision center sponsored by the Marlborough Lions Club, will be offered as well as blood pressure checks and heart health screenings from Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School's practical nursing students. Marlborough Hospital will offer cholesterol screening and blood sugar tests. Free samples from Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and Bayer Health Care will be distributed to all senior citizens during the morning hours of the conference.

Workshops will run throughout the day and include issues such as: Living an Injury Free Lifestyle, sponsored by Intel; Silver Sneakers exercise class sponsored by Fallon Community Health Plan; hot paraffin wax hand treatments and manicures, sponsored by the Assabet Cosmetology students; a legal workshop with local attorney Kevin McAllister; Shifting Gears sponsored by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles; drug safety, and family genealogy.

The conference will be held at Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School on Fitchburg Street on Thursday, April 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Tickets for admission and door prizes are free and are available at local Councils on Aging. Tickets are available at the door, but given the tight time constraints, seniors are advised to get tickets in advance. Tickets are also available at Resor's District Office located in the Walker Building, 255 Main St., Marlborough, or by calling 508-786-3040.

The free vision screening will only be available from 9 a.m. until noon.

A hot lunch and live entertainment will also be provided.

Seniors from Resor's Middlesex and Worcester districts are invited, which includes residents of all or parts of Acton, Ayer, Boxborough, Harvard, Hudson, Littleton, Marlborough, Maynard, Northborough, Shirley, Southborough, Stow, Sudbury and Westborough.
