Top 10 Spots to Golf in Retirement

Retirement is the ultimate reward for golf lovers. The workaday world is in the past. Now, it’s the sunshine, the fairways and putting greens, with as much time as you want to lounge and lengthen the day.

Implementing a database of 1000 Best Places to Retire, U.S. News created a Top 10 list of best places to retire for golfing fans.

  1. Sun City, AZ, is ranked in the esteemed list because of its proximity to 220 public and private courses. That’s enough variety for even the most intrepid duffer.
  2. Mount Pleasant, SC, comes highly considered for retired golfers. The year-round temperature is sunny and warm. Thirty top-notch golf courses are in the vicinity. Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head are a few miles’ drive away and provide a bevy of golfing greens.
  3. Charlotte, NC, was a top vote-getter in the U.S. News poll, especially because of it’s famed PGA’s Wachovia Championship course, and other numerous courses.
  4. Bonita Springs, FL, is within reach of more than 135 courses in Lee County. A 20-minute drive away is Naples, one of the country’s golf meccas.
  5. Rancho Mirage, CA, a resort community, is home of the LPGA’s Kraft Nabisco Championship only 7 miles from the golfing mecca, Palm Springs.
  6. Auburn, AL, university community is a top spot for golfers-in-retirement. It is positioned at the base of Grand National, one of eleven sites designed by golf course architect, Robert Trent Jones.
  7. Chicago suburb, Lemont, IL, is home to the Cog Hill Golf & Country Club, which biennially hosts the PGA’s BMW Championship. It is surrounded by 140 courses in Cook County. It’s a hardier choice for retired golfers; the links unavailable during winter. But the Windy City offers its cosmopolitan charms.
  8. Georgetown, TX, is the favored choice in the Lone Star State for retired inveterate golfers. A Del Webb retirement community, it possesses two 18-hole courses, and is a half-hour drive to the state capital and golfers’ heaven, Austin.
  9. St. George, UT, houses the Red Rock Golf Trail, eight courses assembled within a radius of a 15-minute drive.
  10. Portland, OR, makes U.S. News top ten because of its damp climate keeping the links lush.
