Presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain have both agreed that the US healthcare system needs an overhaul, however, their respective policies are different.

In news that may be of interest to those looking for skilled nursing care, the Miami Herald has explained that some sector commentators believe the key to reform will be to meet somewhere in the middle of the pair’s plans.

Healthcare tops the agenda

According to the resource, although the global financial crisis is still making the headlines, it is healthcare which is the priority on the agenda of many voters.

A September Harris poll revealed that this issue ranked number two for the majority of US citizens, ahead of the Iraq war and just below the economy.

Tommy Thompson, former secretary of health and human services during the George W Bush administration, said: ”I don’t think there’s any question that 2009 is going to be the biggest year ever for healthcare in America … There’s a lot of things that need to be done – and can be done."

Meanwhile, older people in the US are becoming increasingly concerned about the ability they will have to retire comfortably and are looking to the next president for answers, according to Market Watch.
