Watching world-class athletes tighten their skis and fly down a hill, lace up their skates and glide across the ice or heave a granite stone across a curling sheet is always a thrill (especially if you have an HDTV), but not all demographics appreciate the events equally.

According to Nielsen ratings, retirement living seniors over the age of 55 are 82 percent more likely to watch the Olympic Games than the average citizen, and 56 percent of prime time viewers are women.

The survey also discovered that minorities are 74 percent less likely to watch the winter sporting events, and that West Coast residents are more likely to view the games than those in other areas of the country.

Perhaps all of the awe-inspiring feats of athletic abilities will encourage active living seniors to head to the great outdoors and try their hand at winter sports?

According to an estimate provided by Livestrong.com, a 175 pound man would burn nearly 650 calories in an hour of cross-country skiing.
