Microdermabrasion is a kind of cosmetic procedure in which the most superficial layer of the skin is either partially or completely removed, and undergoing this sort of treatment could improve the quality of retirement living.
Microdermabrasion can be performed using a coarse diamond-studded instrument that causes molecules to change in older adults the same way they do when skin recovers from a wound, according to a report in the October issue of Archives of Dermatology.
"Microdermabrasion is a popular procedure for skin rejuvenation," wrote the authors of the article.
"It has been suggested that microdermabrasion can improve the appearance of wrinkles, atrophic acne scars, dyspigmentation and other signs of aging skin."
The reason such a coarse instrument is sometimes used to perform the procedure is because hard substances help buff the skin. Microdermabrasion also involves the production of collagen, which is a structural protein found in the skin.
Though the treatment sounds uncomfortable, the patients involved in the study experienced a mild period of redness that lasted less than two hours.
