New senior citizen center planned in Massachusetts

Town officials in Rockland, Massachusetts, recently announced their intentions to build a modernized retirement living community that will feature a number of attractive amenities and will be a prime residence for older adults in the area. According to The Patriot Ledger, the center is expected to include a cafeteria, exercise room, library and health clinic.

The news source reports that many in the town claim that the current senior center is not nearly sufficient to service the town’s nearly 3,000 senior citizens. Officials are expecting to receive a government grant that will cover nearly 75 percent of the $9 million price tag.

"Many [seniors] are housebound, they have no place to go," John Rogers, chairman of the town’s housing authority told the news provider. "If you have a nice, attractive senior center, we can get these people out rather than sitting at home all by themselves."

Senior centers such as the one planned in Rockland provide older adults with an opportunity to stay physically active, which has endless benefits. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services reports that studies have shown individuals 55 and older who exercise can experience the same improvement in muscle strength as those in their 20s and 30s.
