Older persons living with arthritis might be interested to know that copper bracelets and magnetic wrist straps might be useless when dealing with the condition. A study led by Stewart Richmond, a research fellow from the University of York, revealed that the two devices were ineffective for managing the pain that is caused by osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis. Richmond's work was published in a journal entitled Complementary Therapies in Medicine. "It appears that any perceived benefit obtained from wearing a magnetic or copper bracelet can be attributed to psychological placebo effects," said Richmond.  "People tend to buy them when they are in a lot of pain, then when the pain eases off over time they attribute this to the device."Yet Richmond says that these kinds of bracelets are no better than ones that don't contain copper or are not magnetic. Furthermore, devices containing metal can be more expensive than ones that don't. Magnet therapy is still a growing industry with annual worldwide sales of up to $4 billion. © Copyright |

A Massachusetts State senator will host a senior health and wellness fair at a retirement living facility in Framingham in late November.
On November 21, Senator Karen Spilka will invite visitors to a fair that was organized specifically for seniors, reports the MetroWest Daily News. The event will include workshops, exhibits and free health screenings.

Oregon could get new senior housing facility

Elderly people in Oregon might be interested to know that a new senior housing facility could be built in Beaverton.
Providence Health and Services, a nonprofit health system, wants to team up with the city to build a facility for seniors, according to the Beaverton Valley Times. The structure would be built on land near Southwest Farmington Road and Southwest Main Street.
