The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced that it plans to build the country's first retirement living resource center for older lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals.

There could be up to 4 million LGBT seniors in the U.S. today, according to HHS. The department says the agencies that provide these people with services might not know how to best help them, and that's why a center designed specifically for LGBT individuals is a good idea.

The new center will provide its members with information regarding LGBT matters and also mainstream aging services, like learning how to plan ahead for the future and organize long-term care.

The Administration on Aging plans to award the center a grant that will bring it $250,000 each year. Government to create retirement living resource center for LGBT seniors

According to an article published by the Seattle Times in 2004, between 2 and 3 percent of the country's adult population is gay. The Times says, however, that these numbers are based on census data and there is a widely held assumption that the figures represent an undercount.
