Beans have long been thought of as a great source of vitamins, but it looks like the nutritous food may have more benefits than originally thought. The food has recently been proven to lower cholesterol and boost cardiac health.

Independent living seniors who are concerned about their heart may consider eating the flavorful legume at least once a day.

Beans proven to prevent heart disease for independent living seniors "Like all foods that contain a lot of soluble fiber, beans help bind cholesterol and keep it from being absorbed in the gut," Philip Ades, author of the EatingWell for a Healthy Heart Cookbook says.

Although many Americans choose to skip their daily dose of beans, active living seniors should remember that they can easily be added to any meal. Individuals can try throwing them on their salad, using them as a side dish or even making sure they have a hot cup of chili once in a while.

Heart health is vital to one’s overall wellbeing. More than half of patients hospitalized for heart attacks had high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels that were considered poor by the national guidelines.
