Possible breakthrough in type 1 diabetes

New research has emerged offering clues about the cause of type 1 diabetes, opening doors to one day develop ways to predict or prevent the condition if caught early.

Finnish scientists discovered "disturbances" in lipid and amino acid metabolism in children who later developed diabetes. This may result in an early indication of the condition.

According to some scientists, the current early detection tests for diabetes may be too late in the progression of the disease for "therapeutic approaches," which suggests this new study may benefit people who have yet to become afflicted with the disease.

Possible breakthrough in type 1 diabetes

The results of the study were recently published in the December 15th issue of the Journal of Experimental Medicine.

Diabetes in the elderly has been an ongoing problem, especially in the UK where an aging population continues to grow. In an article in Diabetic Medicine, it was stated elders with the condition are at a greater risk for drug side effects and that most studies of the disease focus on the younger patients.

According to a 2004 study, there are approximately 1.8 million people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK.
