Retirees who live in independent living communities don’t have to give up on providing community service because of their age, as one 90-year-old woman from Bakersfield, California proved.
Margaret Delfino has been donating blood since 1954, with only a brief break from 2001-2006 when she was being treated for
cancer, and she recently donated her 200th pint at Houchin Blood Bank with several family members looking on, according to a CNN Radio report.
Although the great-grandmother has given more than 25 gallons of blood to help those who need transfusions, she says that others could join her, telling the news provider, "To think in Kern County that there are only 3 percent who give blood when there are so many who are able to donate."
Delfino enlisted the aid of her relatives who she brought along for the event, with many of those in attendance also giving blood, according to the Bakersfield Californian.
Greg Gallion, the blood bank’s chief executive, says that her efforts are "a testament to her commitment to this community."
