A year-old plan in Norwich could be the model for helping older persons determine whether their driving skills are strong enough to remain behind the wheel.

Motorists can have confidential checks of their abilities under the Guidance for Older Drivers scheme, with general practitioners offering tests of physical capabilities such as vision, according to the Norwich Evening News.

"I think in Norfolk there will be a higher proportion of elderly drivers than in other parts of the county," says William Armstrong, the Greater Norfolk coroner who would like to see the program extended, told the newspaper. Elderly motorists can have driving skills checked in independent living schemes "People are aware as they get older they may need some extra support and guidance."

Driving can become more difficult as tempers flare during the heated summer months, with more road rage stemming from the stress caused by rising temperatures, notes an editorial in the East Kilbride News.

Seniors who take advantage of programs like those in Norwich may be able to limit the feelings of stress that many say is linked to driving, according to the news provider.
