Independent living community residents may be loath to give up their driving privileges, and initiatives from both the AARP and AAA may ensure that they can drive safely well into their retirement.
AAA has launched a new website called AAAseniors.com that includes driving tips for those who may have reached

retirement age but still want to use their cars to travel around.
It includes tips for purchasing cars that include options like four doors that are easier for older people to operate, as well as adjustable seats and driving wheels that enable drivers to remain more comfortable and be able to respond to circumstances along their journey.
"According to our research, many adult children of older drivers, the ‘sandwich’ boomers, are unaware that resources exist to effectively address the safety and mobility challenges of senior drivers,” said AAA vice president of public affairs Kathleen Marvaso.
Those benefits could help senior drivers who have been the subject of legislators calling for changes in the testing requirements for older motorists, according to the Gloucester Daily Times.
The paper cites statistics from AARP finding that drivers who continue to operate their vehicles over age 65 are responsible for fewer accidents than younger motorists.
