The changing face of nursing

Nurses as portrayed in films and television shows are moving away from the "unflattering stereotypes" characterized in earlier productions, it has been claimed.

In news that may be of interest to those seeking skilled nursing care, research by Dr David Stanley, a lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Australia – published in the UK-based Journal of Advanced Nursing – involved reviewing films made between 1900 and 2007.

The changing face of nursing

"Public perceptions of different professions are strongly influenced by the media and in the past the way that nurses have been represented in feature films has often been at odds with the way nurses perceive their profession," he explained.

Dr Stanley went on to note that nurses needed to be aware of this portrayal and work "proactively" with the media to create a realistic and accurate image of the profession, Eurekalert states.

He continued that the general public would most likely continue to be influenced by what they saw on a film screen and such medical professionals should attempt to counter negative images and build on positive ones.

Meanwhile, presidential candidates have been urged to remember long-term care when it comes to their discussions on reforming the current healthcare system, according to Market Watch.
