After reviewing fire standards and regulations in all 50 states, USA Today reported that many of them do not set or enforce safety standards and rules at licensed assisted living facilities.
Individuals who are considering moving a family member to an assisted living facility might ask about what procedures are in place to assure the safety of their loved-ones loved one in case of an event such as a fire.
At the Arches Alzheimer’s Care Facility in Northfield, Connecticut, many of the residents were unable to be located or evacuated when the local fire chief staged an unannounced fire drill early in the morning, according to the Concord Monitor.
The news source reports that because the Arches is an assisted living facility, and not a nursing home, it is required by law to ensure that the residents are able to evacuate the building in a timely manner in case of an emergency. This incident marked the third failed evacuation drill for the Arches.
Because there are many different kinds of assisted living facilities, it’s important for family members to be familiar and comfortable with the way the one they settle on is run.
