Federal grant to help active living seniors seeking a job in Florida

Today, Governor Charlie Crist announced that the federal government awarded over $2.9 million dollars to the state in order to assist active living seniors who are looking for a job.

"This grant announcement comes at a time when older Floridians seeking jobs need it most," the governor said. "Every older worker offers a lifetime of experience and perspective that is an asset to any employer."

The money will be used to fund the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), which last year helped over 1,200 Floridians develop their job skills and enhance their ability to find a position.

With the added funds officials hope this year that number will climb to 200 or more.

Many active living seniors feel qualified for the positions to which they’re applying. However, some may be nervous that employers will discriminate against them because of their age. The AARP suggests that professionals who are continuous learners are likely to have an edge in the job market.
