Pill bottles mark advocacy groups' attempts to effect health care reform

Most people think of messages in a bottle as evoking a stranded castaway, or a tropical discovery on a sandy beach. AARP hopes it will send some congressional leaders as a message as they prepare to head back to Washington DC.

The group, which advocates for improved retirement living conditions for members, has taken on healthcare reform as its chief priority as summer winds down. Pill bottles mark advocacy groups' attempts to effect health care reform

They recently initiated a press conference in Peoria, Illinois, calling on Congressman Aaron Schock to commit to improving medical services for aging constituents.

"AARP is bringing to Congressman Schock a prescription for reform from his constituents: fix what's wrong with our health care system, and preserve what's right," said volunteer Mary Patton. "We cannot afford not to fix healthcare."

Patton and others then delivered pill bottles filled with residents' stories to Schock's office, part of a statewide initiative to deliver thousands of similar messages to legislators.

National Health Care Shell Game Wednesday, November 4, 2009

By Jim Brigleb

Good golly, Molly, what's the latest on the national health care bill? Which health care bill? Why, I'm not even sure what the health care bill says. How would we? Not only are there a variety of bills being cast about, the contents are not being divulged for examination.

Remember that shell game where you try to watch the illusionist's hands as they quickly change 3 shells from one position to another, all in the blink of an eye, and you’re supposed to know which half shell contains the pea? Well, there's a lot more than three shells, contents unknown, being moved about by 100 senators and 435 representatives. These folks, you know, our representatives, count on us not knowing the rules of the game - confusing constituents with committee rules, cloture, and other terminology that cause us to shrug our shoulders.

Budget cuts could affect retirement living in California Friday, October 2, 2009
California's fiscal crisis might have a negative impact on retirement living, as thousands of seniors could reportedly lose at least some of their supportive care.

The UCLA Center for Health Policy Research says the budget cuts that went into effect on October 1 are an unfortunate development for older persons.

"Our research finds that the state cuts to long-term care services are driven primarily by a quest for saving dollars that disregards the human impact of the results," said the associate director of UCLA's center Steven Wallace.

New senior support group initiated for dissenters from AARP's healthcare views Wednesday, August 19, 2009
The American Seniors Association may be the first sign that a small number of seniors are worried about the prospect of limited home care and other medical services in retirement living.

Although AARP remains more than 40 million strong, the new American Seniors Association has gained more than 50,000 members in the past two months, according to the New York Times.

It is not the first time that healthcare issues have caused splinter groups to form among advocates for the elderly: the group lost nearly 100,000 members in 2003 and 2005 because of support for Medicare Part D and Social Security privatization efforts, reported the newspaper.

The ASA offers a drug discount card, and unlike the AARP is open to membership from any age group.
