Older people 'put off downloading'

The older generation of Britons tend to put off downloading content from the internet due to prior bad experiences and a lack of spare time, one sector commentator has claimed.

Commenting on the impending digital switch over, Ben Camm-Jones, news editor at Web-User Magazine, said another factor which may put off older people are varying broadband connections which demonstrate differences in terms of speed and quality. Older people 'put off downloading'

He added that it is easy to imagine that such individuals who are not familiar with the technology may be put off if they have a bad experience on the first attempt.

"There is also a section of the older generation that is put off by newer technology and will happily continue to do things the way they always have - they'll hire films from a shop ... and wait for repeats or video tape programmes they want to see," Mr Camm-Jones concluded.

An online survey, conducted by ABI Research in March 2008 found that age influenced several patterns of consumption.

For example, penetration into the games console market by Britons aged over 65 grew more than 200 per cent in a year.

However, 65 per cent of over-65s have never used video on demand.

Silver surfers may benefit from site designed by fellow seniors Thursday, August 27, 2009
Seniors aren't averse to social networking sites to blog and chat about retirement living activities, as recent surveys from Pew Research suggest.

More than half of Americans over the age of 64 go online today, and more than one in ten have become involved with social networking sites, according to the survey.

But some retirees think that more seniors would become involved if they had a resource of their own.

That's why an elderly couple from Queens, New York, joined a friend from Florida in creating GenKvetch, a site that allows silver surfers to share articles and other stories with each other, according to the New York Daily News.

"[I have] always been fiddling around with computers," Illy Brown, one early adopter, told the news provider about the site.

Silver surfers learn how to manage wave of new technologies safely Friday, August 7, 2009
Communities have been offering training seminars for elderly residents looking to incorporate the internet in retirement living plans, and a recent example found seniors in Franklin Township, New Jersey learning how to avoid scams and find their way online.

According to Pew Research, seniors are increasing their use of broadband internet which allows them to easily access complex websites, and the session at the municipal community and senior center used Verizon employees to educate the elderly residents on how to best use the technology.

"The internet provides many benefits including education and entertainment, and more and more seniors using this valuable tool," said Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula, who sponsored the presentation.

Rural broadband access could improve retirement living in UK Friday, July 24, 2009
While many urban retirement living communities may have access to high-speed internet service, an expansion to rural areas may benefit seniors who are increasingly using the internet to gain access to home care providers and social networking sites.

The problem may be that a government plan in the UK to provide universal internet access sets the bandwidth goal too low at two megabits per second, according to a Daily Telegraph editorial.
