More seniors going online

In the near future, it may not be odd for a teenager to log onto Facebook and find a friend request from their beloved grandparent.
A new survey has found more senior citizens are spending time online compared to numbers four years ago.

The Pew Research Center said 45 percent of respondents, who were between the ages of 70 and 75, reported they were currently active on the internet. The survey was taken

More seniors going online between 2006 and 2008.

In 2005, only 26 percent of seniors in the same age range reported they were active online, which makes the current jump almost double what it was four years ago.

The findings also revealed the most popular online activity for online senior citizens older than 64 was emailing and that 74 percent of the respondents to the survey said they routinely send and receive email.

One reason more seniors may be going online is because the baby boomer generation, many of whom have embraced the internet, is approaching retirement age, which will significantly increase the number of senior citizens in the U.S.

Next month, more seniors may find themselves online thanks to the national switch to digital television on February 17th.
