Internet’may stave off ageing’

Older people may be able to keep the effects of ageing at bay for longer by using the internet regularly to keep their minds active, one sector commentator has claimed.

Tom Stewart, joint managing director of System Concepts, said that there was evidence to suggest that the prolonged use of the brain can prevent the negative side effects of ageing from surfacing and can also keep people alert.

"There’s almost a classic cliche that it’s not getting older that stops you from doing things; it’s stopping doing things which makes you get older," he stated.

Mr Stewart added that individuals could also communicate more quickly using the internet and that by reading and researching things online they would also be exercising their brains with some mental problem solving.

According to the October 2008 University of California study on the internet’s effect on the brain, for computer-savvy middle-aged and older adults, searching online triggers key centres in the brain that control decision-making and complex reasoning.

In addition, internet searching engages complicated cognitive activity, which may help exercise and improve brain function.
