Technology isn’t passing seniors by according to a new survey that finds centenarians in assisted living facilities and other residences are using the internet and popular technologies like Twitter to communicate with friends and family online.
Thanks to help from grandchildren and great-grandchildren, about 12 percent of the retirees have shared photos on the internet and 3 percent of them have posted tweets on Twitter, according to a survey commissioned by Evercare, which provides healthcare options to older people.
"Being older doesn’t mean that you are not going to stay in tune with these new technologies," Sherri Snelling, Evercare senior director, told Reuters.
"It definitely is a lesson to all of us that keeping your brain engaged by doing Twitter or going online, or whatever, is going to be helpful to living longer."
Maintaining social interactions could reduce the effects of aging on motor function, according to Rush University Medical Center doctors who say that more involved seniors had better measures of walking and balance capabilities that lessened the chance for disabilities.
