Residents of independent living communities in Cleveland may have seen the send-off for the Summer National Senior Games which was held July 9 and helps show seniors that retirement living does not preclude athletic achievement.
More than 10,000 seniors will attend the summer games this year, scheduled August 1-15 in Palo Alto, California, including many Ohio residents who stopped by at the send-off to talk about their experiences.
One of them, Al Fess, is a 64-year-old who says that playing volleyball allowed him to reach a goal that he set after undergoing several knee surgeries and losing 50 pounds for the event.
"I get excited about playing volleyball and I enjoy the camaraderie," said Fess.
"It’s great to get together with people my own age and compete."
Likewise, his colleage and fellow state resident John Sanders has said that his seven medals in three previous Senior Games has not whetted his appetite: he has rededicated himself to using training for the event and achieving more this year.
Retirement living community residents in Ohio will be able to see their compatriots compete closer to home in 2013, when the games will be held in Cleveland.
