Military veterans will gather in Alabama to spice up their retirement living with some friendly competition at the 23rd Annual Golden Age Games from June 1-5.

About 700 competitors are expected to attend, according to the organizers, and can compete in active events such as bicycling, swimming, discus and shotput. Other events that test skills rather than strength and agility include bowling, croquet, shuffleboard, horseshoes and marksmanship.

They’re split into divisions based on ability, including ambulatory, wheelchair–assisted and visually impaired. The winners have the chance to qualify for the National Senior Games, held every other year.

“The Golden Age Games continue to grow every year, and the athletes who participate are testimony that the spirit of competition, camaraderie and commitment to an actively invigorating lifestyle,” said Marilyn Iverson, director of the Veterans Canteen Service, one of the event’s sponsors. "This spirit not only helps to prevent illness, it strengthens the hearts and rejuvenates the soul."

The event, which is also sponsored by the Veterans Administration and Help Hospitalized Veterans, is designed to provide active opportunities for former service members no matter their activity level, says HHV executive director Mike Lynch.
