Elder persons in London can now remain active by taking advantage of the outdoor playgrounds available to them. According to the Associated Press, the city will soon be opening its first outdoor playground for senior citizens.
Other cities in the UK, such as Manchester, have already offered similar playgrounds to residents. The city of London is planning to open the facility in Hyde Park this coming spring, according to the New York Daily News.
"We wanted something that would be of long-term benefit to people, so we came up with this idea for an older person’s playground," Madeline Elsdon, whose local residents’ association organised the funding for the new elderly play area, told the news source.
The project has a budget of 40,000£ and those who are involved are hoping that the idea will become a trend that will usher in a new age of physical fitness, the news provider reports.
According to the BBC, a Finnish study found that after three months of playing in a park on a regular basis, elder persons between the ages of 65 and 81 experienced better balance, speed and coordination.
