Number of senior gamers growing

Thanks to the Nintendo Wii, senior citizens may have more in common with their grandchildren than with their sons and daughters.

A recent report states that approximately 4.4 million people aged 55 years or older use Nintendo products, the New York Time reports. The findings come from Packaged Facts, a market research firm, and suggest the gaming console strategy of targeting an older demographic has paid off.

Bob Brown, who wrote the Packaged Facts report, told the news provider Nintendo has been a driving force in gaming in recent years.

"My wife’s mother lives in a retirement community, and the last time we were there, everyone was excited because they were getting a Wii in there," Brown said.

Prior to its launch on September 14th, 2006, Nintendo had fallen behind in the game console war with Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s Playstation.

Number of senior gamers growing After launching the Wii, Nintendo essentially ignored the core gaming demographic, made up of young men between the ages of 18 and 34, and focused on everyone else.

This included parents, women, and senior citizens.

Since then, the Wii has been a successful gaming product that can be found in various retirement and nursing homes around the country with residents having bowling tournaments and tennis matches.
