Newspaper: seniors should exercise extra caution in winter

As parts of the country were hit with yet another winter storm last week, one newspaper reminded senior citizens about the importance of being especially cautious during this time of year.

The Patriot Ledger in Massachusetts has compiled a list of tips for seniors in an effort to protect them against loss of body heat and hypothermia, two conditions they are more vulnerable to.

When they go outside, seniors are advised to wear loose-fitting, layered and lightweight clothing, according to the article.

Newspaper: seniors should exercise extra caution in winter Mittens are warmer than gloves and a hat should always be worn since approximately 30 to 50 percent of body heat loss occurs from the head.

If inside, the news provider suggests keeping the thermostat at 65 degrees to prevent hypothermia and freezing pipes within the home’s walls.

Another thing seniors may want to keep in mind is to keep well hydrated during the winter.

"Seniors’ bodies aren’t as resilient as they once were. It’s far more important for a 70-year-old woman to stay hydrated than a 30-year-old woman," Dr Robert Butler told the Ledger.
