A grocery store chain in Southern California is offering a free service for senior citizens to get their health screened.
Starting today, Ralphs customers and associates are eligible for free health services that including checking on one’s cholesterol, blood pressure, risk of diabetes and body mass index. When combined, the services can cost up to $40, according to the company.
"Heart disease is one of the most prominent illnesses affecting our country today.
By offering these free screenings, we hope to create awareness and provide education on heart disease and the importance of frequent health screenings," said Rebecca Cupp, director of pharmacy for the grocery store chain.
The free screening initiative comes in the middle of American Heart Month, which is dedicated to raising awareness of the disease and raising funds for more research.
Heart disease is the number one cause of death of men and women in the U.S., though recent studies have found women may not be fully aware they are at risk for the condition. Some women have suffered a heart attack without any prior symptoms.
Seniors interested in improving their heart health can do so by managing their diet and losing some unwanted pounds.
