Dialysis may be a treatment option worth considering for more than 26 million Americans who suffer from chronic kidney disease, and several informational seminars are available, including for those using homecare. March is National Kidney Month, and Fresenius Medical Care, a dialysis provider, offers monthly sessions on treatment options to those who may begin dialysis treatment, which eliminates waste product  s that weakened kidneys cannot otherwise process on their own.Patients who are on or are considering starting dialysis treatment should be mindful of several recent studies if they don't attend the seminars, including its interaction with the blood thinner warfarin and a new efficacy study about large-membrane dialysis. Large membrane dialysis did not provide an improved survival rate overall, said researchers from the Manzoni hospital in Italy, but it did benefit those with a higher risk profile and those who suffered from diabetes University of Virginia physical therapists report that patients can reduce the breakdown in muscle that occurs by incorporating exercise during treatment. Hyperthermia is its chief concern, and staying inside as much as possible on extremely hot days can help seniors, many of whom may be at higher risk due to poor blood circulation or the inability to sweat as a side effect of some medications.
For those who still want to head out, large air-conditioned areas like malls or movie theaters could help seniors looking for activities outside of their home.

Dry eye disease increases with age

As many Americans grow older and begin to look at retirement homes, they should also remember to reassess their health, particularly that of their eyes.
A new study that focused on older men reveals that men over the age of 50 are more likely to suffer from dry eye disease.
The report appears in the Archives of Ophthalmology and it measured clinically diagnosed dry eye, or severe symptoms of this affliction.
