There’s some good news for senior citizens in the final version of the much-debated $789.5 billion economic stimulus package, which was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives this afternoon.

The compromise worked out by the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate gives the Social Security Administration $1 billion in funding, which will translate to some senior citizens receiving a little extra cash and new computers within the department.

Seniors who collect Social Security and who do not qualify for the package’s tax credits because they do not work, will receive a one-time $250 payment.

A total of $500 million of the funding will be used to replace the agency’s National Computer Center, which is nearly 30 years old.

"Passing this plan is a critical step but as important as it is, it’s only the beginning of what, I think, all of you understand is going to be a long and difficult process of turning our economy around," President Barack Obama said to business leaders at the White House.
